Commas, other - Graduate Writing Center
Other Commas
Here are a few more comma rules, many of which you likely already know. That said, you're always welcome to make a coaching appointment if you have questions!
-
Place a comma between a city and state—Monterey, California—and between a day and a year: June 7, 2018. If you're using the day-first date system—e.g., 7 June 2018—no comma is needed.
-
Use a comma to separate two or more coordinate adjectives—discrete adjectives that describe the same noun: a big, bold book.
-
Use a comma after verbs like "said" and "stated" when they introduce a quotation that is a complete sentence: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated, "I have a dream."
-
Use a comma when omitting one would cause confusion because of content (use sparingly).
