Lecture title:  Technologically Advanced and Rapidly Deployable Integrated Power and Water Systems that Minimize Logistics Tails

Lecture Abstract: 
The U.S. military sees a growing need in its Indo Pacific and other areas of operation for integrated expeditionary water and power systems that minimize logistics tails. The Marine Corps currently has several active development programs underway in response to specific directives from its Installation Command to address serious power and water issues. Safe, secure, sustainable access to low-cost and environmentally friendly power and water is critical for force projection, resilience, base protection, and to address community concerns. The presentation will inform of breakthrough technology developments accomplished by CAP (and now CAPWAPII) in advanced seawater desalination using renewable energy.

Speaker Bio:
Robert L. Campbell is the Founding Executive Chairman of CAP Water & Power International, Inc. Known worldwide as a pioneer in economic, high technology seawater desalination with integrated renewable energy sources, Mr. Campbell has over 40 years of business and industrial experience, including more than 20 years as a CEO, Staff Scientist and Senior Executive in the high technology sectors of the defense industry.

Previously, Mr. Campbell was the founding Chairman, President and CEO of Advanced Counter Measure Systems Inc., and is a well-respected expert in the field of defense technology conversion and COTS as well as foreign technology conversion for defense. For several years, he served the National Academy of Science, Naval Studies Board, National Board of Directors of the American Electronics Association (AEA), and founded the Sacramento Entrepreneurial Academy along with the local chapter of the AEA.

While on U.S. Army active duty, Mr. Campbell directed EMP simulator design, construction and deployment for the Safeguard Anti-Ballistic Missile System at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. He also fielded Active Electronic Warfare Systems for the US Army Electronic Proving Grounds, STRATCOM and various agencies while assigned to Ft. Huachuca and Ft. Monmouth Signal Center and School.

Mr. Campbell holds science, engineering, and management degrees and certifications from St. Mary’s College of California, UC Berkeley, the University of Arizona, Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Campbell has numerous publications and patents, many of which are still classified at TS-SI-TK or SA levels.

Visit of Foreign Naval Attaché Delegation

Up to 25 Foreign Naval Attachés will visit NPS on Friday, 8 November 2024 as part of a week-long visit to California. Other stops include San Diego and Los Angeles. Composition of the group remains to be confirmed, but we expect it to include multiple Flag Officers.

Composition of the group will drive agenda, but expect meetings to be requested with at least: senior leadership, IGPO, meetings with students from their countries. Possible interest in NPS research (if appropriate based on composition).

Physics Colloqium: Quantification of Malaria Parasite in Blood Sample Using Lensless Inline Digital Holography (LiDH)

Speaker: Charlotte Kyeremah, University of Massachusetts Boston

Abstract: Early and accurate diagnosis of malaria in the human red blood cells is acute to the success of eliminating malaria. The method of malaria diagnosis using optical microscopy involves staining and manual counting of infected cells by trained personnel, making the process subjective, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. Here we propose to develop a 3D-printed lensless in-line digital microscope (LiDHM) without the need for staining the cells. We will integrate the microscope with a small embedded systems hardware platform to run multiple neural networks in parallel for image classification, object detection, segmentation, processing, and machine learning algorithms for automatic detection and quantification based on parasite stages in infected cells, and display for the visual user interface. We present the results of LiDHM along with the proof of concept by imaging-controlled phase objects and biological specimens.

The Naval AI Summit is an important component of the NAVPLAN Implementation Framework, and it will gather AI experts representing the Navy, other military services, defense organizations, stakeholders, students, academic scholars, AI experts, and even some industry pioneers. The goal is to discuss how AI can transform naval capabilities and tackle current maritime challenges. The event will provide a platform for learning about DOD, USN, and USMC platforms and processes for AI systems, for exchanging experiences and ideas regarding practical AI, and for discussing some of the most influential advancements in AI technology for naval applications.
