Mission


Naval Medical Admin Unit (NMAU), Monterey, serves as the medical liaison office for all Navy and Marine Corps service members attached to Naval Postgraduate School, the Defense Language Institute, Naval Support Activity Monterey, Fleet Numerical and Oceanography and several other smaller tenant commands. The mission of NMAU is to provide medical support services in order to detect and resolve issues impacting unit and individual mission requirements. Services provided include: suitability screenings for all Operational duty screenings, the administrative portion of the Periodic Health Assessment, health benefits advisement for international students, consultation and referral authorization, limited duty and medical evaluation board coordinator, preventive medicine and industrial hygiene inspections of Naval Support Activity Monterey.

Physical Health Assessments


  • The Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) is a screening tool used by the armed forces to evaluate the individual medical readiness of their Service members. It can be conducted alone or can be combined with other individual medical readiness needs (e.g., dental exam and immunizations)
  • The Annual PHA replaces the 5yr physical exam for Active Component and the 6120/3 Annual Certificate of Physical Examinations for Reserve Component
  • PHAs are required during your Birth Month, if permitted

Steps to Complete Your PHA

  1. PHA Part I: Complete the online assessment at https://eha.health.mil/EHA/
  2. PHA Part II: After completing your online assessment, please call DHA VIPRR CARE CLINIC to schedule your PHA Part II appointment at 1-844-863-3236.
  3. FYSA. Other medical/dental requirements in the completion of your PHA:
    • DENTAL EXAM:
      For NSAM and NPS staff and students, call (831)656-2477/6982 to schedule a dental exam.
      For DLI staff and students, call Presidio of Monterey Dental Clinic at (831)245-5612/5613 to schedule a dental exam.
    • IMMUNIZATION(s): Call to schedule at 1-866-957-2256. Flu vaccines can be completed out in town (Walgreens, Safeway etc.). Please send documentation to usn.lemoore.navhosplemooreca.list.nhlem-monterey-suitability@health.mil, which will update your record or you may also drop off a copy off your immunization card you received from the local pharmacy out in town to POM-AHC.
    • LABS: HIV BLOOD DRAW, DNA, G6PD, Sickle Cell, Blood Type: Walk in at the main Army Health Clinic (M–F 0730–1530) located at 473 Cabrillo Street, BLDG # 422, Presidio of Monterey, CA. 93944. Clinic telephone number is 866-957-2256.
    • AUDIOGRAM: Call to schedule at 1-866-957-2256.

NMAU assists active duty members and their families with completing their OPERATIONAL/OVERSEAS/SEA DUTY/SUITABILITY SCREENING (all refer to the same screening), or MEDICAL ASSIGNMENT SCREENING (after a period of limited duty).  Per BUMEDINST 1300.2B, the Suitability Screening process is required to be completed within 30 days of receipt of orders, 60 days for dependents. It is important that a Suitability Screening is thoroughly completed on each service and family member that is selected to go overseas.

Process Steps

  1. Contact NMAU by UN-ENCRYPTED email: usn.lemoore.navhosplemooreca.list.nhlem-monterey-suitability@health.mil with the following information, to begin a Suitability Screening:
    1. -Name/Rank
    2. -Next Duty Station/Unit
    3. -Planned PCS Date
    4. -Telephone
    5. -Dependents (if going OCONUS or enrolled in EFMP)
    6. * SPECIAL PHYSICAL (i.e., SUB/DIVE/SPECOP/AIRCREW/FLIGHT)-if applicable to orders

  2. From here, NMAU will provide forms and due requirements, with instructions on how to complete. *IF YOU HAVE ALREADY STARTED ON FORMS OTHER THAN FORMS NMAU PROVIDES, PLEASE BE SURE THEY ARE THE MOST UP TO DATE REVISIONS (REV FOUND AT THE BOTTOM LEFT OF FORMS). ANY OUTDATED FORMS ARE OBSOLETE AND CANNOT BE ACCEPTED*

SM has 30 days and family members have 60 days to complete their screening-from the time SM  receives the orders or letter of instruction.

Limited Duty (LIMDU) / Physical Evaluation Board (PEB)


Temporary Limited Duty (TLD) is defined as a documented period of medically restricted duty, in consideration of a patient’s illness, injury, or disease process.  Placement of TLD is most appropriate only for Sailors whom a return to medically unrestricted duty status is anticipated.  TLD may only be provided as the result of the actions of a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) properly convened at a Military Treatment Facility (MTF).  TLD is a period when the member reports to their workspace, but during the period the member is excused from the performance of certain aspects of military duties, as defined in their individual TLD write-up.  During TLD, the member undergoes continued care, recovery, and rehabilitation aimed at returning the member to a medically unrestricted status.

Physical Evaluation Board/Integrated Disability Evaluation System (PEB or IDES): A case usually enters the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) when a MEB is dictated for the purpose of evaluating the diagnosis and treatment of a member who is unable to return to military duty.  The member’s condition most likely is permanent or chronic, and/or any further period of TLD is unlikely to return the member to full duty.

A condition is considered permanent when the nature and degree of the condition render the member unable to continue naval service within a reasonable period of time (normally 8-12 months or less).  Note: The term "permanent" does not necessarily mean the condition is unfitting.

Referral of a Medical Board report to the PEB can be referred for IDES by Pers-835 (service headquarters) or submitted directly to the PEB by an MTF.

 If your PCM determines that your illness or injury requires more than 12 months (two periods) of Limited Duty or is permanently disabling the PCM will put in a referral for Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) at Naval Health Clinic Lemoore. The PEB will take place at either Naval Health Clinic Lemoore. You must check out your Military Health Record and hand carry it to your PEB appointment.

The only way to be on LIMDU status is by the PCM recommendation, the only way to change the LIMDU status is the PCM recommendation.

Process Steps

  1. PCM decides if the SM needs to be on LIMDU status, see LIMDU coordinator at the NMAU office with filled and signed 6100/5 with the PCM's signature 
  2. F/ U with LIMDU coordinator on monthly basis
  3. get in touch with LIMDU Coordinator if there is any change in medical condition
  4. See your PCM 30 days prior to LIMDU expiration
  5. At the 30 day mark PCM will decide if another period of LIMDU will be issued
  6. If extention is granted by your PCM repeat step 2,3 and 4
  7. member can be on LIMDU for only 12 months LIMDU status after that the member must be / will be referred for PEB
  8. The member does not have to on LIMDU status if the PCM decides that the SM's injury so severe that SM can not return to full duty at that point PCM will automatically refer the patient for PEB

Physicals


All physicals (i.e., dive, submarine flight, re-enlistment and separation/retirement) are processed through the Presidio of Monterey Army Health Clinic Readiness Nurses. Questions may be directed to NMAU.

To initiate a physical, please report to the clinic front desk to receive the corresponding paperwork. When complete, please call 1-866-957-2256 to schedule the PART 1 appointment with the Readiness Nurses.

Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)


The Department of the Navy (DON) EFM was established in September 1987 to coordinate ealry, special education and related services for children with disabilities who are attending, or eligible to attend. The DON EFM evolved to include the identification and enrollment of all family members with special needs at overseas and Continental United States (CONUS) locations. It is DON policy to ensure Navy families with exceptional family members (EFMs) are assigned only to areas where their EFMs medical and educational needs can be met. Failure to enroll family members with special needs may result in arrival at overseas or remote duty assignments with requirements beyond the capability of local medical, educational, or community resources. This may result in unnecessary family hardship and personnel practices such as the early reassignment of the Service member due to inadequate educational / medical support.

EFM coordinators facilitate initial enrollment and guide families to other services if required. Command points of contact can also assist service and family members with the enrollment process. EFM enrollment is mandatory and required immediately upon identification of a special need. DD form 2792, Exceptional Family Member Medical and Educational Summary and DD form 2792-1, Exceptional Family Member Special Education/Early Intervention Summary are used for enrollment.

Process Steps

  1. As soon as Dependent is identified as possible EFM case, the case will be forwarded to EFM Coordinator
  2. SM and possible EFM will require to fill out DD Form 2792 and DD Form 2792-1, according to EFMP Application Legend
  3. Contact EFM coordinator to get an appointment, bring filled DD Form 2792 and DD Form 2792-1 with you at the time of your appointment
  4. DD Form 2792-1 is needed for all the children/ students that are 3 years and older or children 3 years and younger who requires special education/ early intervention. The form is to be filled out by the school (if a student). If home schooled, the school district sponsoring the homeschooling will fill out the paperwork. If the child is not in school the provider can sign the form
  5. Once the EFM package is completed and reviewed by the EFM coordinator the package will be forwarded to Central Screening Committee (CSC)
  6. Sponsor may view their EFM status by accessing their family member information in the Navy Family Accountability Assessment System (NFAAS)
  7. Once family member no longer requires ongoing health care, specialty service, early intervention, or special education is eligible for disenrollment from EFM program
  8. Contact EFM coordinator for disenrollment from EFM program

International Students Health Benefits


The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) founded in 1909, is a fully accredited university offering over 35 unique academic masters curricula to military and civilian members of the Department of Defense and allies around the world. NPS invites over 119 foreign countries educational opportunities throughout the year. There are different types of courses available for International Military Students (IMS), the length of the courses vary from two weeks to two years. For the courses longer than 12 months, IMS are encouraged to bring their family with them. IMS will get an official Invitational Travel Orders (ITO) for traveling to the United States.

The purpose of the Health Benefits Advisor (HBA) is to be a medical liaison between Military Treatment Facilities (MTF), Civilian Treatment Facilities, the International Program Office, IMS and their family members.  The HBA is a resource to guide IMS through medical systems in the United States. The HBA also provides assistance with the Uniformed Services Health Benefits Program (USHBP) and Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS).

Sick Call: Sick call hours are from 0730-1600 Monday through Friday with the exception of our lunch hour from 1200-1300. It is recommended that you call early in the morning to guarantee an appointment on the same day. 

Exam: Annual exams are routinely scheduled every 20 minutes. We ask that you allow yourself a full hour as unexpected delays and sick call patients occasionally interrupt the exam schedule. Every attempt will be made to get you in and out in a timely manner. Please understand that we are required by NAVY directives to maintain a DENTAL READINESS LEVEL to ensure MISSION READINESS. Therefore, we ask that you contact us as soon as possible for scheduling.

Overseas Screeening: We ask that you call us to schedule an appointment. Please attempt to have all family members present at one time. You should have all necessary forms (e.g.... NAVPERS 1300/1 or equivalent) and bring photocopies of ALL treatment provided by current local civilian dentists. You may ask your family member's dentist to provide duplicate or original x-rays for the screening. Otherwise, new x-rays will be taken.

Cleanings: Routine cleanings are provided as needed depending on the recommendation of the Dental Officer. You must FIRST schedule an exam before your cleaning appointment or a cleaning must be indicated in your current treatment plan, if recently seen at a previous command.

Restorative Dentistry: We provide a wide variety of routine filling procedures and use both white fillings and silver fillings as indicated but we will take your personal preference of material choice into consideration.  

Specialty Care: Currently all specialty care is referred out to local civilian facilities. We will refer out for root canals, oral surgery procedures, crown and bridge and implants. For implant treatment to be approved you must have a minimum of two year orders. Orthodontic treatment is currently not authorized at this command. 

Night Guards/Sports Guards: Night guards and mouth guards require an evaluation from NPS dental officer. Referrals are made based on need and or symptoms.

Lieutenant Commander Redgate is a native of San Diego, California.  She attended the University of Notre Dame on an ROTC scholarship from 2002-2006 and received a BA in Psychology.  She then attended Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine on the Health Professions Scholarship (HPSP) from 2006-2010.  She commissioned in 2010 and reported to Balboa Hospital, San Diego, California for General Practice Residency Training from 2010-2011.  She served as a dental officer onboard the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) from 2011-2013, and then served as a dental officer at Naval Branch Health Clinic, Naval Base San Diego (NBSD).  She deployed on the USNS Mercy for Pacific Partnership 2015, serving as the Dental Department Head for the Humanitarian Mission, and dental subject matter expert for the ADVON team supporting operations in both Fiji and the Philippines.  In 2015 she was selected for the Comprehensive Dentistry Residency Program at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland.  In 2018 she received her Comprehensive Residency Postgraduate Certification and a Master of Science in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). 

In July of 2018 she reported to Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Monterey California where she currently serves as the Dental Department Head.  Her personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medical, Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification, and various other service and personal awards.
